IVL’s early focus was on developing technology and products for music education. A fast and accurate technique was developed using microprocessors to identify the pitch of notes played on musical instruments. First products were sold by IVL in 1984 to the music education market – the intent being to provide an aid to musicians learning to play on pitch.

Proprietary techniques evolved to deliver a broader range of products including the following:

  • Harmonizers for instruments. Sold under the Digitech brand, these products combined pitch shifting with pitch detection to create 3 part harmony generated from the melody. The effect was to add a 3 instrument horn section to the solo with no perceptible delay
  • Vocal harmonizers. Interest from singers triggered development of specialized pitch shifting accommodating the unique characteristics of vocals. Achieving distortion-free harmony with no delay provided the basis for a line of vocal harmonizers also sold under the Digitech brand. These products were considered breakthrough and won many international awards.
  • Vocal harmony products were introduced to the Japanese commercial karaoke and consumer markets. IVL gained valuable experience in designing products for low cost offshore manufacturing. Although no longer involved in consumer karaoke due to low profit margins, IVL sold over 750,000 handheld players to customers such as Walmart, Best Buy, Target etc. and was awarded “Best Product of 2002” by Business Week. We continue business with Daiichi Kosho, the market leader in Japanese commercial karaoke.
  • Music industry diversification. Over the past three years, IVL has developed strategic partnerships with customers in different segments of the music industry. The following customers/segments are supported:
    • Harman Signal Processing, Salt Lake City. The vocal harmony line of products was sufficiently successful that Harman established a separate brand, VOCALIST, rather than marketing the products as a sub-category of Digitech.
    • Beatkangz Electronics, Nashville. The Beat Thang is a music production system allowing hip hop artists to compose and play beats.
    • XP Audio, Salt Lake City. A line of guitar pedals was developed and is sold under the Morpheus brand.
    • StantonDJ. The SCS4.DJ, a fully integrated computer, software and controller was introduced in the summer of 2011. It recently won the "Best DJ Controller Under £600" award from DJ Magazine, a respected UK publication.
