The Clinical Studies of Hearing Health

A study conducted in 2016 found that a lack of antioxidants is a major contributing factor to hearing damage in the ears caused by oxidative stress, particularly in people with tinnitus.

A study conducted in 2014 evaluated the connection between a diet high in antioxidants, magnesium and hearing in 2592 participants. The results showed that those with the highest intake of magnesium and vitamin C had the best hearing. In comparison, those with the lowest intake were more likely to have hearing loss.

Another study that took place in 2011 found that supplementation with N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) can help protect cochlear damage from gun fire in an enclosed space. The study supplemented military gun men with either NAC or a placebo after an indoor shooting exercise. Those who took the NAC did not experience any ear damage from the gunfire, whereas those who did not take NAC experienced mild damage to the ear.

A study conducted in 2005 tested the ability of NAC and acetyl L-carnitine to protect hearing from damage by loud noises. The participants that received the supplement experienced less hearing damage and a decrease in hair cell loss in the ears was noticed.

Another study conducted in 2012 evaluated the impact of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) on noise-induced hearing loss. The participants were exposed to a loud noise with no supplement, with 600 mg of ALA before the exposure, or with 600 mg of ALA for 10 days before the exposure. Those that received the ALA for 10 days had significantly less hearing damage compared to the other groups.

Another study conducted in 2010 evaluated the connection between folate, homocysteine, vitamin B12, and hearing loss. Participants with elevated homocysteine were 64% more likely to have hearing loss. Low folate levels increased the odds of hearing loss

In another study conducted in 2002, 60 subjects examined the benefits of ginkgo biloba on the symptoms of tinnitus. Subjects were given 80 mg of ginkgo twice a day as well as an infusion treatment or a placebo. Those that received the treatment experienced less tinnitus-induced hearing loss and reported improved hearing.
